Dmitry Smirnov — Chef, DJ & Founder of The Place
Born and raised in Moscow, Dmitry Smirnov began his creative journey in music, studying cello at a special music school. His classical background taught him harmony, balance, and attention to detail — qualities that later shaped his approach to food.
After completing his studies, Dmitry worked in a Japanese restaurant alongside two remarkable Japanese chefs, mastering the art of precision and simplicity. His culinary journey then took him to Paris, where he trained at the legendary Hôtel Costes. Returning to Moscow, he worked as a head chef in several restaurants before deciding to move to India with his daughter to pursue his dream — to open his own restaurant.
In 2005, that dream came true with Bora Bora Morjim, a 24-hour restaurant that quickly became one of Goa’s most iconic spots. Alongside his culinary work, Dmitry built a successful career as a DJ.
In 2018, he opened The Place — a restaurant he built with his own hands, from the pizza oven to the tables and interiors. Since it’s a small restaurant, Dmitry believes that the focus must always be on delicious, honest food.
When guests ask what’s best on the menu, the answer is simple:
“We try to make everything delicious. And if you don’t like your dish, you don’t have to pay for it.” That’s the philosophy of The Place.
As a DJ and musician, Dmitry created a special playlist for The Place — a smooth blend of lounge and deep house that perfectly complements the restaurant’s warm and relaxed atmosphere. Music plays an essential role here, adding harmony and emotion to every meal.
Outside the kitchen, Dmitry leads an active and adventurous life. He is passionate about tennis and has won six tournaments in Goa over the past five years, reaching the finals several times. He also enjoys sea fishing from a kayak, finding peace and inspiration on the open water — once, he even caught an 18-kilogram fish. Dmitry is also an animal lover with two kind-hearted pit bulls and a cat.
In every sense, Dmitry is a person of creativity, balance, and positive energy. The Place reflects everything he values — good food, good music, and a genuine connection with people.
